In Singapore, where the demand for plumbing services is high, homeowners must remain vigilant against the threat of scammers. These criminals often target individuals during emergencies, when desperation can cloud judgment. It’s important for homeowners to educate themselves about potential scams and safeguard against exploitation.

Understanding common scams and knowing how to avoid them is crucial for safeguarding your home and your wallet.

Common Plumbing Scams

  1. “Too-good-to-be-true” pricing model

Scammers advertise shockingly low rates to attract customers. Once they are in your home, they may exaggerate the complexity of the job, claiming that additional services or parts are necessary, leading to inflated final bills. This tactic not only deceives homeowners but also leaves them with subpar workmanship that could result in further issues down the line.

  1. Impersonation of legitimate plumbing companies

Unscrupulous individuals may pose as employees of reputable firms, complete with fake identification. They often attempt to gain the homeowner’s trust before executing shoddy work or, worse, causing damage to ensure additional charges for repairs.

To avoid falling prey to plumbing scams, homeowners should take proactive steps:

  1. Research and Verify

Before hiring a plumber, thoroughly research their credentials. Look for online reviews, and verify their licenses and insurance. Reputable plumbers should have a track record of positive feedback from satisfied customers.

  1. Get Multiple Quotes

Don’t settle for the first quote you receive. Obtain multiple estimates to compare prices and services. If one quote seems significantly lower than the others, it may indicate a scam.

  1. Ask for Detailed Estimates

Ensure that the plumber provides a written estimate detailing the scope of work, materials, and labour costs. This not only protects you from unexpected charges but also gives you a solid reference should issues arise.

  1. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off during the consultation or if the plumber is not forthcoming with information, trust your gut. A reliable professional will be transparent and straightforward about potential costs and procedures.

  1. Request References

Ask for references from previous clients to gauge the quality of the plumber’s work. A reputable service provider will be happy to provide you with contacts of satisfied customers.

By staying informed and vigilant, homeowners in Singapore can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to plumbing scams and ensure that their plumbing needs are met safely and effectively.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, it’s a busy time for many of us with lots of preparations and spring cleaning.  I want to remind you today to take care of toilets’ fengshui.

It is important to have good feng shui toilet as it can help maintain positive energy flow in your home.

Here are some tips to enhance the feng shui of your toilet:

  1. Keep the toilet clean and well-maintained: Regular cleaning and maintenance of your toilet are essential for good feng shui. A clean and well-kept toilet helps maintain positive energy in your home.

  1. Close the toilet lid when not in use: Keeping the toilet lid closed helps contain the flow of energy and prevent it from escaping down the drain. It also helps maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the bathroom.

  1. If your toilet is facing east, it is associated with wood element in fengshui. Wood elements are known for their growth, vitality, and renewal properties, which can help to promote a sense of freshness and vitality.

Add wood elements such as plants or greenery to balance this wood energy and create a more harmonious environment. Plants also can help purify the air, add a touch of nature, and create a more relaxing environment.

  1. Use light and bright colors: Light and bright colors, such as white, light blue, or pastel shades, can help create a sense of cleanliness and freshness in the bathroom. Avoid dark or heavy colors that can create a sense of stagnation.

  1. Keep the bathroom well-lit: Good lighting is essential for good feng shui in the bathroom. Make sure your bathroom is well-lit with natural light or bright artificial lighting to create a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere.

  1. Use mirrors strategically especially if your toilet is facing north which is associated with water element. To balance this water energy and create a more harmonious environment, adding metal elements such as a metal mirror or metal decor can help to bring in the energy of the metal element. Metal is considered to be a strong and grounding element that can help to counterbalance the potentially overwhelming water energy in a North-facing toilet. By incorporating metal elements into the space, you can create a sense of stability and structure, which can help to create a more balanced and harmonious energy flow in the room. Mirrors can help expand the space and reflect light in the bathroom. Place mirrors strategically to enhance the feng shui of the space and create a sense of openness.

  1. Keep the bathroom door closed: Keeping the bathroom door closed when not in use can help contain any negative energy that may be present in the space. This can help maintain a positive and harmonious energy flow in your home.

  1. In feng shui, water is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. A leaky toilet can represent a leak of wealth or abundance. It can also create negative energy in the form of stagnant water, which can disrupt the flow of positive energy in your home. To address this issue from a feng shui perspective, it is recommended to fix the leaky toilet as soon as possible to prevent the loss of wealth and to restore the flow of positive energy in your space. Additionally, keeping your bathroom clean and well-maintained can help maintain a harmonious energy flow in your home.

By following these tips, you can improve the feng shui of your toilet and create a more harmonious and positive energy flow in your home.

Usher in prosperity this Chinese New Year with prosperity toilets!

Toilet Bowl Choke

A toilet bowl choke, commonly referred as a toilet clog, occurs when a foreign object obstructs the toilet bowl, impeding its proper functioning. This obstruction can lead to difficulties in flushing, backflow of sewage water flooding the bathroom, or complications in the drainage system. The foreign objects causing the obstruction may include hair, tissues, toilet papers, pads or any insoluble materials that cannot be easily flushed down the bowl. Failing to address or repair the issue promptly not only results in an unpleasant and foul-smelling situation but also poses the risk of significant water outflow, causing potential property damage and health concerns. Recognizing the signs of a common toilet bowl choke or drainage system complication is crucial. If you are experiencing frequent toilet chokes, it is imperative to identify the underlying cause before it develops into a more severe issue, incurring additional costs.
  1. Old toilet bowl
If you have an old toilet bowl and have constant choke, there may be holes below the rim. These holes may have choked and reduce water flow. The low flushing pressure is not substantial for pushing the waste and insoluble objects and resulting in toilet bowl choke. If you experience this kind of toilet bowl choke in Singapore, it is advisable to change to a modern model toilet bowl.
  1. Slow draining
Slow drainage serves as an indication of a blockage within the pipeline. This is often caused by a foreign object or choke, allows water to pass through while impeding the flow of solid waste. The toilet drainage system is designed to handle human waste and toilet paper exclusively. The introduction of other foreign solid waste items, such as sanitary pads, tampons, paper towels, wipes, or cotton pads, disrupts the normal flow, leading to a gradual slowing down of drainage and, eventually, causing a toilet choke.
  1. Blocked plumbing vent
Modern toilets have roof vents for directing fresh air into the plumbing system (link to other blog) and increasing flushing system. Such vents overtime may be choked with dried leaves, twigs, etc. When the toilet vent is blocked, the pressure of flushing will be affected and results in choke. You need a plumber to detect choke and special tools may need to clear choke.
  1. Sewer line problem
It could be a tree root invading the sewer line or punctured by a sharp object and allowing entry of sediment such as debris. Addressing the problem promptly, here are some additional tips:
  1. Preventive Measures
Encourage proper disposal habits. Remind household members not to flush items like sanitary napkins, facial tissues, or excessive amounts of toilet paper. Consider using septic-safe toilet paper, as some types break down more easily and less likely to contribute to clogs.
  1. Regular Maintenance
Schedule regular maintenance such as using enzyme-based cleaners to break down organic matter in the pipes. This can help prevent the buildup of material that led to clogs.
  1. Professional Inspection
If the toilet choke problem persists, consider hiring a professional plumber for a thorough inspection. They can use tools like a camera scope to assess the condition of the pipes and identify any blockages or damages.
  1. Educate Household Members
Ensure everyone in the household is aware of what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet. Educate them about the proper disposal practices to minimize the risk of toilet choke.
  1. Prompt Repair
Address the toilet choke promptly to prevent the situation from worsening. Delaying repairs can lead to more extensive damage and higher repair costs. If the problem persists, contact crystal plumbing. Crystal plumbing provides both HDB and landed residential and commercial plumbing. Our services include checking the source of the choke, clearing choke and provide maintenance advice. Contact  Crystal Plumbing for a transparent and non-obligation quotation at 9234 2672.

complete plumbing guide for new home

Moving into a new apartment, be it BTO HDB flat or private, in Singapore is an exciting endeavour, but before you start unpacking and settling in, it’s essential to ensure that the plumbing in your new home is in good condition. A plumbing checklist can help you identify any potential issues and address them promptly, ensuring a smooth transition into your new space. Here’s a comprehensive plumbing checklist to follow when collecting the keys to your new apartment:

  1. Verify Water Supply

Turn on All Faucets: As soon as you enter your apartment, turn on all the faucets, including those in the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry area. Check for water flow and pressure. Ensure that hot and cold water are readily available.

Flush Toilets: Flush all toilets to check for proper flushing and refilling. Listen for any unusual sounds, and make sure there are no leaks around the base.

Run Shower and Bathtub: Turn on the shower and bathtub to check for water temperature consistency and drainage. Look for signs of clogs or slow drainage.

Inspect Water Heater: If your apartment has a water heater, ensure it’s functioning correctly. Check for leaks; and make sure it heats water efficiently.

2. Check for Leaks

Inspect Under Sinks: Look under all sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms for any signs of leaks, water stains, or dripping pipes.

Check for Ceiling Stains: Examine the ceilings for any water stains or signs of water damage. This could indicate a leak from a unit above.

Inspect Wall Pipes: Inspect the walls near water fixtures for any dampness, discoloration, or visible leaks.

Examine Floor Areas: Look for any wet spots or puddles on the floors near sinks, toilets, or appliances with water connections.

3. Test Drains

Fill Sinks and Tubs: Fill sinks and bathtubs with water and then drain them to ensure proper drainage without backups or slow draining.

Run Garbage Disposal: If your kitchen is equipped with a garbage disposal unit, run it to ensure it functions smoothly without any strange noises or clogs.

4. Check Water Quality

Test Water Temperature: Verify that the water temperature is comfortable and consistent throughout the apartment.

Taste and Smell: Take a glass of tap water and taste it. Ensure that the water has no unusual odors or flavors. In Singapore, tap water is generally safe to drink.

Water Pressure: Confirm that the water pressure is adequate for your needs in all faucets and showerheads.

5. Inspect Fixtures

Check Faucets: Inspect the faucets for any dripping or leaking when turned off. Tighten handles if necessary.

Examine Toilet Fixtures: Ensure that toilet tanks are securely attached and do not wobble. Check for any cracks or signs of damage.

Look at Showerheads: Check the condition of the showerheads for clogs or signs of rust.

Evaluate Kitchen Appliances: If applicable, inspect the dishwasher, washing machine, and refrigerator water dispenser for leaks or issues.

6. Familiarize Yourself with Shut-Off Valves

Locate Main Water Shut-Off Valve: Find the main water shut-off valve in your apartment. It’s essential to know its location in case of emergencies or repairs.

Identify Individual Fixture Shut-Off Valves: Determine if each fixture has its shut-off valve (e.g., under the sink). Familiarize yourself with their locations.

7. Document Any Issues

Take Photos: Document any plumbing issues you discover with photos or videos. This visual record can be helpful when discussing repairs with your landlord or property management.

Report Problems: Notify the Building Services Centre (BSC) located within your BTO projector or property management immediately of any plumbing issues you encounter. Request timely repairs to address these problems.

If your apartment come with built-in washing machine and dishwasher. Below is the checklist:

Inspect the Washing Machine Connections

Ensure that the washing machine is properly connected to both the water supply and drainage pipes.

Check for any visible leaks around the connections.

Test Different Washing Cycles:

Run a test load of laundry to check if the washing machine operates smoothly through various washing cycles. Pay attention to the machine’s noise levels, vibrations, and overall performance.

Check the Drainage System:

Make sure the washing machine drains water effectively without any blockages. Examine the drainage hose for any kinks, leaks, or damage.

Inspect for Mold and Odors:

Check the drum and rubber door gasket for any signs of mold, mildew, or unpleasant odors. If present, consider running a cleaning cycle or using appropriate cleaning products.

Verify the Spin Cycle:

Confirm that the washing machine’s spin cycle effectively removes excess water from clothes, leaving them adequately spun.

Check Dishwasher Connections

Ensure that the dishwasher is correctly connected to the water supply, drainage, and power source.

Look for any water leaks or loose connections.

Inspect Dish Racks and Interior:

Examine the dishwasher’s interior, including dish racks and spray arms, for signs of damage or blockages. Ensure that the racks slide in and out smoothly.

Test a Dishwashing Cycle:

Run a test dishwasher cycle with a load of dishes to assess its performance. Verify that the dishwasher dispenses detergent properly, fills with water, and completes the cycle without errors.

Check for Proper Drainage:

Confirm that the dishwasher drains efficiently without any water pooling at the bottom. Examine the drainage hose for kinks or clogs.

Inspect for Mold and Odors:

Check the dishwasher’s interior for any mold or mildew growth, and address it if necessary.

Use dishwasher-specific cleaning products to eliminate odors.

Evaluate the Drying Function:

After a wash cycle, check if the dishwasher effectively dries the dishes. Ensure they come out clean and dry.

Test Different Wash Settings:

Experiment with different wash settings (e.g., normal, heavy-duty, eco-friendly) to ensure they function correctly.

Familiarize Yourself with the Controls:

Understand the dishwasher’s control panel and settings, as this will be essential for regular use.

Check for Soap Residue:

Ensure that there is no soap residue left on dishes after a cycle. Adjust the detergent amount or type if needed.

By following this plumbing checklist, you can ensure that your new apartment’s plumbing is in good working order, providing you with a comfortable and hassle-free living experience.

If you find the hassle of doing it yourself, you may consider to hire a plumber to conduct a thorough plumbing check in your new house.

Plumbing plays a vital role in maintaining the functionality and comfort of homes and businesses in Singapore. However, like any other city, Singapore is not immune to plumbing issues that can disrupt daily life and cause inconvenience. In this article, we will explore some of the most common plumbing problems faced by residents in Singapore, along with their underlying causes and effective solutions.

  1. Clogged Drains:

Clogged drains are perhaps the most prevalent plumbing problem encountered in Singaporean households. Accumulated debris, hair, grease, or foreign objects can obstruct the flow of water, leading to slow drainage or complete blockages. Factors like high humidity and the tropical climate make it easier for bacteria and organic matter to thrive, exacerbating the issue.

Solution:

Regular preventive maintenance can help prevent clogs. Installing drain guards, avoiding the disposal of oil or food scraps down the sink, and periodically flushing drains with hot water and baking soda can help keep them clear. For severe clogs, professional plumbers can employ specialized tools to clear the blockage effectively.

  1. Leaky Pipes:

Leaking pipes are a common plumbing issue that can result in water wastage, increased utility bills, and even property damage if left unattended. Singapore’s high humidity and temperature variations can cause pipes to expand and contract, leading to weakened joints, corrosion, or worn-out seals.

Solution:

Promptly repairing or replacing the damaged pipes is essential to prevent further leakage. Hiring a licensed plumber who can accurately identify the source of the leak and use appropriate materials and techniques is crucial. Regular inspections can also help detect leaks early on and save significant costs in the long run.

  1. Faulty Toilet Mechanisms:

Toilets are susceptible to various plumbing problems, such as continuous running, weak flushing, or even complete malfunctions. These issues can stem from a faulty flapper valve, worn-out fill valves, mineral deposits, or improper alignment of internal components.

Solution:

Often, these problems can be resolved by replacing or adjusting the faulty components. Replacing the flapper valve, cleaning the fill valve, or adjusting the chain length can fix minor issues. However, complex problems may require professional assistance to ensure the proper functioning of the toilet.

  1. Water Heater Problems:

Water heaters are integral to Singaporean households, especially in dealing with the high humidity and providing hot water for various purposes. Issues like insufficient hot water, strange noises, or leaks can disrupt daily routines.

Solution:

Regular maintenance of water heaters is crucial to prevent problems. Flushing the tank periodically to remove sediment buildup, checking for leaks and cracks, and ensuring the heating elements are in good condition are some preventive measures. Professional plumbers should handle complex repairs or replacements to ensure safety and proper functionality.

  1. Low Water Pressure:

Low water pressure can make daily activities, such as showering or using kitchen faucets, frustrating and time-consuming. Factors such as aging pipes, mineral deposits, or water supply issues can contribute to this problem.

Solution:

Identifying the underlying cause is vital to resolving low water pressure. It may involve cleaning or replacing clogged aerators, removing mineral deposits from showerheads or faucets, or addressing issues with the main water supply line. If necessary, consult a professional plumber to diagnose and rectify the problem effectively.

Plumbing problems are a common occurrence in Singaporean households, affecting both residential and commercial properties. Timely detection and appropriate solutions can minimize inconvenience, prevent water wastage, and protect the structural integrity of buildings. By understanding the causes and implementing preventive measures, residents can ensure the smooth operation of their plumbing systems and maintain a comfortable living environment. In complex situations, seeking professional assistance from licensed plumbers is crucial to guarantee long-term solutions and peace of mind.

If you encounter a plumbing issue in Singapore, I would recommend considering Crystal Plumbing for your plumbing needs. With a team of experienced professionals and a commitment to providing top-notch service, Crystal Plumbing has become a go-to choice for residents and businesses seeking plumbing solutions.

toilet choke

If you found yourself caught in a situation having a toilet bowl choke at the least inconvenient moment. This situation is indeed every man’s worst’s fear. Imagine staring at the unpleasant scene in a room filled with filthy smell.

These are 10 ultimate ways to unclog a toilet choke and most of the materials can be found around the house.

Method 1: Full Flush and Hold

A poor flush will result in waste remains in the toilet bowl and trapped there. If your toilet bowl has a double flush, press down and hold for a few seconds. The handler connected to the flapper will allows more eater to move from the tank to the bowl.

Method 2: A bucket of Water

Use this method if the toilet bowl does not have double flush. This method has a risk as if it doesn’t work, water will fill up your toilet bowl to the brim.

Method 3: Home Remedies

The easiest and least expensive method to start with pouring diluted dishwashing detergent followed by pouring plenty of hot water. Other home remedies are baking soda and vinegar or baking soda with salt.

Method 4: Use a Plunger

If home remedies failed to clear clog, the next inexpensive method is to use a plunger to plunge the toilet bowl. Make sure there is no standing water. Angle the plunger over the toilet bowl opening. Work the handle up and down, followed by a flush.

Method 5: Use Plastic Bottle and chopstick

If you do not have a plunger, you may improvise with a plastic bottle and a chopstick.

Trim away the bottom side of the bottle to fit the toilet bowl opening. Drill a hole on the bottle cap that big enough to insert a chopstick. Glue the chopstick to the bottle cap with glue gun.

Method 6: Use Drain Blaster Air Plunger

This plunger using the power of high pressure compressed air to blast away the clogs in pipes. First, cover the opening of the toilet with a plastic wrap and leave a gap to place the plunger before squeeze the trigger to apply air pressure. This way will avoid water splashing from toilet bowl.

Method 7: Cloth Hanger

If you do not have a hand auger, you may try using a wired cloth hanger as a substitute by straightening it flat and bend one end to create a hook. However, its length may not reach as far as compared to the flexible cable of a hand auger. Carefully insert the straighten hanger into the toilet bowl to dislodge any clog.

Method 8:  Hand Auger or Plumber’s Snake

A hand auger that comes with a thin and flexible cable. Hang auger can be purchased on-line or from local hardware store. There are various types of augers, I shall suggest a hand auger comes with a rotatable drum that store longer coiled cable.

Method 9:  Chemical Declogger

There are various chemical declogger for toilet bowl choke from local supermarket or hardware store to clear clogs.  Follow the safety precaution and direction as stated on the product packaging as most chemicals are hazardous to health and not eco-friendly to the environment. Also beware that heat generated from chemical reaction can crack the porcelain of the toilet or soften the PVC of the pipes.

Method 10:  Wet/ Dry Vacuum

You will need to empty the toilet bowl before snake the vacuum flexible hose a few inches into the toilet bowl opening. Wrap an old towel around the

hose and apply a bit of pressure to create a good seal around the toilet bowl opening. Turn on the vacuum and there is a chance to suck out the clog.

When all else fails, get a professional plumber to the job.  This minimise our chance of damaging the toilet bowl and messy job.

New year’s gives us a sense of renewal, an opportunity to develop good habits. Plumbing issues can be avoided if we disciplined ourselves at the beginning of the year.

In this new year why not spend a little extra time by paying attention to your plumbing to avoid any unseen trouble popping up. Here is a list of plumbing new year’s resolutions for positive change to help you get the most use of them.

Schedule maintenance for your water or storage heater

In the recent news, a netizen experienced his 60-80kg storage heater fell off due to rusty bracket. He posted a “gentle reminder” on the Facebook group Singapore Home DIY   for others to check their heater. The rusty bracket was the resulted of a leaky pipe and the accumulation of moisture accelerated the corrosion.

Schedule a professional plumbing inspection for annual home maintenance can detect potentially faulty or failing areas of your plumbing and preventing them from becoming a larger scale issue.

Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

A burst pipe, clogged drains or an undetected leaky faucet can cause thousands of dollars of damages to your home. Do not ignore the little things like leaky faucet, pooling around toilet or weird banding sound from your pipes, these can be signs of bigger problems.

Install water-saving Fixture to use less water

Small change adjustment can have savings on your water bills and make every drop counts. Choose more eco-conscious appliances with less water consumption. Install a tap aerator on your water faucets. Adopt high-efficiency toilets with pressure regulator valve.

Treat your toilet and drain better

Do not pour curry or any grease down into your sink. Once this waste cools, it will solidify and may lead to clogs. Making changes on what should not goes down your sink and swirls with every toilet flush.

Watch a video from Housing Development Board (HDB) on an easy way to clear sink clogs and keep your home smelling fresh.
